Portland Area Rethinking Schools has a 20 year history of working to support public education
and progressive reform in the schools. We are teachers, parents, students, community activists
and teacher educators who believe excellent and equitable public schools are essential for all students
to reach their potential and for the creation of a just and democratic society.

Top-Down Mandates and Teacher Autonomy

Please join Rethinking Schools colleagues from the Portland Metro area to explore the tender tension between mandates and autonomy. • What agreements need to be made so that ALL children receive a quality education? • What systemic reforms put equity at the center of every decision? • What agreements can teachers make to ensure that ALL students read writers from diverse backgrounds and write engaging assignments in all content areas? • What systemic agreements ensure that teachers do not shoulder the burden of underfunded or misguided reforms?
